This Hospital has been an East End feature since the London Infirmary (for the ‘sick poor among merchant seamen and the manufacturing classes’) was founded in 1740.

Work began on the present building in 1752 and by the late 19^th century it was housing the largest nurse training school in Britain.

Dr Barnardo trained here and John Merrick, the ‘Elephant Man’ became its most famous resident.  After the cruel torments of his early life, he spent his final four years in conditions of humane privacy, thanks to the kind ministrations of Dr Frederick Treves.
